Membership
Membership in Ethics San Mateo is open to any qualified individual or group that wishes to support our mission.
There are three categories of Membership:
Regular Membership
Regular Membership in Ethics San Mateo is open to any qualified resident of the City of San Mateo who wishes to support our mission.
The qualifications are:
- Reside within the City of San Mateo.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- No conflicts between our mission and the applicant’s employment, organizational memberships, or other conflicting affiliations or affinities
- Not a current City of San Mateo elected or appointed official OR a city employee serving at the will of the City Council.
- Signed agreement to abide by the Ethics San Mateo Code of Conduct.
Regular Members may serve on non-executive committees and are eligible for consideration to be appointed to the board of Directors.
Ethics Supporter Membership
Ethics Supporter Membership is open to an individual who may not meet the qualifications for Regular Membership but wishes to support our mission.
The qualifications are:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Agreement that there are no conflicts between our mission and the applicant’s employment, organizational memberships, or other conflicting affiliations or affinities.
Ethics Supporter Members may not serve on committees or be eligible to be an officer or for appointment to the Board of Directors.
Group Membership
Group Membership is open to nonprofit community organizations. This membership category includes organized resident’s associations, organizations providing community services, or other public benefit entities.
The qualifications are:
- The group is formally organized and be a nonprofit entity within the City of San Mateo.
- The group adopts a resolution supporting the mission of Ethics San Mateo.
- The group commits to being non-discriminatory.
- The group appoints a representative to Ethics San Mateo, who will be required to provide the same information as a Regular Member applicant and be subject to the same conditions and Code of Conduct.
The group representative may serve on non-executive committees and is eligible for appointment to the Board of Directors and can be an officer of the corporation.

Why do we request detailed information?
Our members may become involved in fact-finding, investigations, and decisions. We do not take lightly our pledge and responsibility to be fair and impartial. Our members are free to have opinions and activities which may not be in line with our efforts at times, we ask that members pledge to put aside any pre-judgments and anything else that may cause a conflict with our mission while participating in our organization’s efforts. These questions are asked to ensure our members do not have conflicts with our Mission or Code of Conduct.
The questions are focused on specific information that will help us be assured that unresolvable conflicts do not exist.
All information provided will be held confidentially within Ethics San Mateo. We will not release any of the information publicly without your express authorization.
As the credibility of our organization is vital, all information provided will be subject to verification.
2023 MEMBERSHIP DUES*
- Regular Member: $75/year
- Ethics Supporter: $40/year
- Group: $150/year
* Subject to increase in following years for annual renewal
Dues are payable upon acceptance of the application, and annually thereafter.
